I was born in London although I’ve actually spent most of my adult life elsewhere.
My current home is the south of Spain, on The Atlantic coast, where I have been for the past 11 years.
I can trace my insatiable appetite for travel back to our annual family camping holidays where we all packed into the car and crossed the channel. I was seduced by the brightness of the light, the vibrancy and the otherness that lay beyond my world in north London. I can still vividly recall the strange and blinding sun at midday, the enticing and unfamiliar smells coming from the camp stoves around us, the people whose daily lives were both a mystery a fascination for me. These early sensations clearly sowed a seed inside me and turned me into the nomad that I am, always chasing light, colour and enticing flavours.
Living in different places for extended periods of time has given me the opportunity to get on the inside of daily life in those other worlds. Many of my photographs are taken of people and places I encounter in my day to day, of my neighbourhood and my neighbours. By living in a culture that is not my own I am both connected and an observer. I think this is reflected in my images
Recently my work has turned more towards the capturing of culture and tradition. In a rapidly changing and ever more homogenised world, I find myself driven to grasp what I can before it’s gone. In both these images and in my food photography, I strive to preserve the idiosyncrasies of cultures that are at risk of being eroded, to capture something real and something beautiful that I fear maybe slipping away.
